The 5 Biggest Mistakes You Make When Painting Furniture

The 5 Biggest Mistakes You Make When Painting Furniture...

Make a new beauty out of an old piece with a little patience and a good repainting job. Sometimes, our furniture just calls for a new paint job to restore it’s old glory back. It can’t be that hard right? We’ll not if we are expreienced, but for the rest of us, it is a must to know some tips before doing your own repainting of furniture. Now instead of giving you tips on how to do it the right way, I’ll share my mistakes instead so that you’ll learn how to avoid them and do a great job. 1. Not using Sander cause it feels smooth already. Even if the furniture looks dolphin-smooth, chances are, you still need to sand them for better results. There are paints or primers that claims no sanding is necessary, but basically it is a must. When sanding, make sure to control the pressure as your goal is only to smoothen, and not to strip the surface up. You may use a 150-grit sandpaper, or an 80-grit if there is an exisitng varnish already. 2. Forgetting to remove residue. As much as possible, make the surface as clean as can be – which includes removing the residue. It is highly advisable to use a tack cloth instead of a paper towel or lint-free cloth. Tack cloth does the job and you don’t need no other kind. 3. Not Using a Primer. Specially for laminate furniture, never forget t use a primer. It is best to use a mini foam roller and a foam brush for those hard-to-reach areas. Before going to the next step, always make sure to let it dry fully. Once it’s fully dried, just sand away those extra drips and follow it up with a wipe (tack cloth). 4. Rush or Impatient Painting. With the smoothness and cleanliness assured, it’s now time to paint. A mini foam roller would definitely do the job. Make sure apply about 3 thin coats and allow about 6-8 hours in between coats to ensure quality for the paint job. It is also very important to sand in between coats, to make sure everything is leveled and softened up. You may use the same sanding block, but always use a new tack cloth to make every speck of dust is removed before proceeding to the next step. This is one of my biggest mistakes, and I have reach a point of blaming the opened environment, or our dogs for the pieces of dust after painting, but it was in fact because I failed to remove everything with my tack cloth. 5. Forgetting to Apply Protection. Now that you’re almost done, make sure all the efforts last longer with a coat of Polycrylic water-based protectant. Make sure to apply smoothness when doing this process to avoid having bubbles from foam roller use. Once the process is done, allow a safe 72 hour drying time before using the furniture again. This will help prevent it from being...

Practical Tips on Finding The Perfect Theme For Your Modern Living Room...

With the variety of choices available these days, achieving the perfect theme for your room – even with a limited budget – is made easy, especially with these 5 practical tips to help you find the perfect theme for your rooms. Choose a theme within your passion I know, I know. This sounds like a very basic tip. But reality is, this is a very important thing to consider knowing that it is both hard and costly to have a change of theme when work has been done or halfway done already. Staying within your passion helps you make sure you will be able to relate with, feel comfortable, and never grow out bored with your chosen theme. When choosing a theme, consider the availability of the supplies and furniture needed. The basic idea is, it is best to select a theme where you can easily shop for supplies locally. It will not only save you a bunch, but it will also make it easier for you to make estimates on your budget, size, and positions of your preferred furniture. If lucky, you may even get great deals out of it from your local market. And this ay, you can enjoy the convenience of warranties (if available) or returns/replacement in case certain unexpected turns comes your way. Your Home’s Surroundings Even the perfect theme will not fit well if it doesn’t match the surroundings of your home. A summer theme can work well if you’re near the beach, or a tropical theme can work wonders in a green surrounded home. Though experimenting can work wonders, it is best to consider your surroundings along when choosing a theme for your room. Make sure your space can accommodate your preferred theme Some themes require more spaces than others, and though improvising can be an option, knowledge of your available space can be an advantage. When picking a theme, it is good to choose one that is withing your preferences and can fit well with your available space. Get inspirations from others, but always consider the difference in space from your inspiration and your current space available. Consider a plan that’s according to your budget Unless you have unlimited funds, always remember that you have a working budget – and as much as possible, try to stay within that budget. You may home to compromise on some areas, but it is highly advisable to ensure comfort over style when compromises are a need. Achieving the right theme for your home is just a matter of matching your interest with a little creativity, and often times, the ability to improvise. Your preferred theme can be achieved in many ways, and it’s just a matter of finding what work with what you want to achieve – in a practical...

The Best Small Living Room Sofas for Apartment Living

The Best Small Living Room Sofas for Apartment Living...

If you live in an apartment, here is one rule that you can live by: the bigger the couch, the more cramped the room gets. A big sofa in a small room is bound to leave out little space for living. If your sofa pushes the coffee table into the media console, or it crowds out the end table, then it is clearly too big. To get a better sense of space in your home, prepare yourself to forgo the luxury of sprawling in front of the TV. Rather, prop your feet up your coffee table. Be aware of those “apartment couches” that stores call — they are usually too deep and too wide for your charming apartment space. If you are in the market looking for small living room sofas, there are some rules to live by: DO Measure the area that will be your living space. If your room comes with multiple spaces in it, like a living and bedroom or living and dining room, ensure that there is about two to three feet between each space. Once you have established how much room you can spare for your couch, give at least a foot (preferably 18 inches) on either side for standing lamps and end tables. If your space is small, chances are that the couch will propped against a wall. Keep this in mind when buying, and consider if the new couch will block windows. DON’T Do not buy a sofa without measuring and even seeing the space. Also, do not measure right up to the table of the dining area or the bed in the sleeping area. It would be unwise to buy a fat couch, which means that you do not buy anything overstuffed that looks like a La-Z-Boy. Also, do not get a futon. Leave those in places where they belong (like college). Instead, invest in an air mattress. Below are some great picks on the best couches on the market today that are small enough for apartment living: Windsor Loveseat – Espresso by Meadow Décor. This is perfect if you are looking to decorate with a homey, traditional style. Main Street Loveseat – Indigo by Ave-Six. Its indigo color is gorgeous, and would make for a great pop of color in your space without being too overwhelming. Memphis Art Deco Retro Sofa Loveseat by Adesso. This is a more modern piece that would be ideal for modern minimalist apartment...

So if you are decorating a small space, come up with a good plan and have the right tools. This is especially crucial in living rooms as this is the place where the whole family converges. And while people say that the sofa is a must in every living room, this does not have to be the case when space is a premium.  With the use of small living rooms sets, you can add some charm to your space with just a loveseat and chair. Rather than trying to stuff an oversized sofa in such little space, opt for a small-scale loveseat and chair for your living room. We recommend the Grey Eco Leather Love Seat – Black Finish Legs by Office Star paired with a plush chair. An ottoman makes for a great addition in a smaller living room. Go with oval tables since they are smaller in scale and are easier to move around, especially in tighter spaces. Plus, these tables give small drawers which are great for tucking away books, magazines and remotes. Helpful Tips on Decorating with Small Living Room Furniture

Helpful Tips on Decorating with Small Living Room Furniture...

Decorating a small living space can be difficult because of the minimal space that you can work with. But you can arrange small living room furniture to make the room  appear larger than it is. By positioning furniture a certain way and following a few decorating instructions, small living room spaces can indeed be inviting and comforting, rather than uncomfortable Choose a fixture or piece of furniture that will be the focal point of the space. For most living rooms, it can be a fireplace or the family TV. Pick one that is more appropriate to the needs of the room. Position your seating area the focal point. If you desire a couch, opt for a small loveseat instead like the Regent Cushion Loveseat by Ave-Six. For chairs, choose one or two small ones that do not appear overpowering. Reclining chairs are usually large and therefore will not be suitable for smaller rooms. Opt for a smaller coffee table, if you could use one. Rather than buying one large coffee table, get two smaller ones. You can arrange these tables any way that you want for as long as you can easily move them around if there is a need to make more space. Aside from a coffee table, you can also get a side table like the Andy Round End Table by Allan Copley Designs. Avoid buying furniture that covers the windows or prevents any natural sunlight from entering your living space. Natural light often gives the illusion of a bigger room, so positioning tall furniture in front or near windows can emphasize the smallness of the room. Pick shelving units that stand tall against the walls like the Greenington Carmelized Magnolia Shelf. Limit their number to one or two, so that some wall space is still visible. Wall space can help give the illusion of a larger space, especially if they are painted with white or any light color. Select lighting options that are simple, and yet give ample lighting. Avoid purchasing chandeliers or other dramatic lighting options as these pieces tend to overwhelm the space. A tall white floor lamps should be an ideal option for a small room. Finally, hang a mirror on the wall to create the illusion of a larger space. Never hang more than one or two, though, as having too many reflectors can make your room appear tasteless.
